Hi There, Vodafone still offers 2G network coverage across the country, last I checked there is no definite date for its shutdown announced yet. Regards Matt

also what functions work without the sim card and can they make phone calls on the watch?

Hi Sarah, this watch needs a fully activated SIM card to function, with the SIM inserted it can be used to receive phone calls and make calls to preset numbers. The App can be downloaded on an iPad. Regards Matt
