Yes it does look like that/as you would expect except both of mine I received would only expand and not retract, and they both expanded as the box opened as I opened the packaging..
So to reiterate, they clicked open and closed in a position, but when they opened too far and I wanted to shorten they, they wouldn’t adjust, you couldn’t move them.

When you want to retract, you can open the buckle first and then retract it.

Should it slide up easily or does it flick open to one side, I don’t want to force it to break it ?

The buckle is easy to open, you don't have to worry about damage.
